How Much Does A Federal Firearms License Cost?

Federal Firearms License Cost

If you are selling firearms in retail or in wholesale, you require a federal firearms license.

The same applies if you are manufacturing firearms or ammunition, repairing them, serving as a pawnbroker, or customizing features such as barrel stocks and trigger mechanisms. In short, you need to comply with regulation if your business involves handling firearms, modifying or selling them. Even more importantly, when selling guns online, only FFL dealers can release them to customers. You thus may wonder how much does a Federal Firearms License cost.

To apply for an FFL, you need to make sure that you are twenty-one years of age or older, have a state location for conducting your business, and have not earned a criminal record involving more than a year of jail time, documented addiction issues, mental incompetence, dishonorable discharge from the military, or domestic abuse charges. You also need to be a US citizen and the license must be valid.

Do not hide any information when filling out an FFL application. Failure to disclose relevant facts and information ensures that you will not receive the license.

Costs For FFL Holders

FFL applications need to pay a fee to apply, and a renewal fee if they are qualified. Each license is valid for three years after the initial approval date. Applicants must mail in ATF form 7, the fee, a photograph and a federal record of fingerprints to their regional Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) office. Then you must prepare to wait up to sixty days to find out if your application was approved or not.

If the firearms are deemed as destructive, the manufacturers and retailers have to pay more for their license, $3000 for both the initial application fee and later for the renewal. If a business manufactures or imports machine guns, shotguns, short-barreled rifles and destructive devices, then they need to pay a special occupational tax based on revenue. If revenue is below $500,000 then the tax is $500; above $500,000 it is $1,000.

Pawnbrokers and dealers have to pay less, $200 for their application fee and $90 for renewal. Standard manufacturers and importers pay $150 for the application and renewal respectively. Those that collect curios and relics, as well as ammunition manufacturers, only have to pay $30 for the application and for renewal respectively. The prices are thus tiered depending on your business.
